Alison Jay was born in Hertfordshire and grew up in Derbyshire UK.

She studied graphic design at the London College of Communication and specialized in illustration .She graduated with a first class honours degree and began her career working for animation studios, she soon changed to illustration as she found the process a little too laborious .

Alison has been illustrating children’s books for over 30 years, she has also written her own stories which include, Looking for Yesterday and three wordless books, Out of the Blue, Welcome to the Zoo and Bee and Me.Her latest project was Tree and Me, a companion book the Bee and Me which is due be published in 2026.

Alison’s most exciting project was in 2014, she was asked by the Ghibli museum in Tokyo to include her art work from her picture book version of “The Nutcracker “in an exhibition with the Oscar winning director Hayao Miyazaki .She was flown over to Tokyo to see the exhibition, attend a press event and meet Hayao Miyazaki. The exhibition lasted for a year.

In 2016 inspired by the Ghibli animated films,Alison wrote and illustrated “Bee and Me” which was nominated for the Kate Greenaway prize .

In her spare time, between book work, Alison loves to paint small paintings of anything that inspires her ,usually animals, which she sell in her Etsy shop The Alison Jay Gallery. Alison works in Alkyd (a quick drying oil paint) she sometimes adds layers of varnish to give an aged crackled effect.
